Britain on Film is one of the most significant film archive projects ever undertaken by the BFI and encompasses rarely and unseen content from the BFI National Archive and the UK’s nine national and regional Screen Archives.
The films digitised for the project span from the 1890s to the present day and uncover a hidden history of the UK.
The brief? To handle the PR campaign in Wales.
What I did:
- Selected archive films that would generate news coverage such as the controversial flooding of the Tryweryn Valley in 1965
- Researched and briefed media spokespeople – some of whom actually appeared in the archive films
- Worked closely with the BFI and the Screen and Sound Archive of Wales to ensure key messages were communicated
- Worked with media in Wales to ensure maximum coverage
Successes:
- 46 pieces of print, broadcast and online coverage were generated
- Highlights included interviews on all of BBC Wales’ TV, radio and online news platforms in English and Welsh, a five-minute feature on S4C’s Heno magazine show, a double page spread in Western Mail’s Saturday magazine, an interview on the Radio Wales Arts Show plus features in Wales’ regional and local press and key blogs.
- I was commissioned to work on follow up projects: BFI Rural (2016) and BFI Coast and Sea (2017)
What they said:
“Jane led the Welsh PR campaign to launch the BFI’s Britain on Film project and it was a great experience. She is creative, proactive and responsive and has a very professional approach. Her understanding of, and great relationships with, local and national media meant that we were able to reach the widest possible audiences in Wales with this campaign and have genuine impact in the area.”
